Chocolate Labrador Puppies are
beautiful and a bit more challenging of the
three colors of Labrador Retrievers
to produce.
Both parents must carry the
chocolate gene to be able to produce
chocolate puppies. A yellow
and chocolate should not be bred
together as it produces incorrect
pigment which will carry down for
four generations.
Chocolate Lab
Pups are just as intelligent and
capable as the yellows or blacks,
especially when well bred.
Chocolates suffered a bad reputation
for years due to people inbreeding
in the belief they would produce
more chocolates, unfortunately such
practices beget mental and physical
ailments.
They are born with eyes and
ears sealed shut until they are
about two weeks of age.
When they first open their
eyes they are blue which gradually
change to a greenish tinged brown
which turn to brown at about
nine months of age.
Chocolate Labs have chocolate colored
pads of their feet and pigment on
their nose and around their eyes.
All well bred
Labrador Puppies, whether black,
yellow or chocolate, are born with
the classic otter tail and web feet
which assist them in being very
strong swimmers when their
conformation is well balanced.
